This project consisted on creating a scene with only sound effects, no video was allowed and the students needed to utilize the foley technique in at least four sound effects that were created by us using random objects. Before recording the foley sounds and edit the sound effects, students were supposed to create a detailed outline that explained the sounds that will be used to create this realistic narrative. There was a maximum of seven words during the scene of 1 to 2 minutes.
To approach a good result of the project my partner and I decided to take more time on the outline, so that the story would be better organized. After finishing planning what sounds effects we were going to use and what sounds we were going to create, we looked up and investigated how to create the foley sounds we were going to do.
Our project was about a group of people in a theme park watching a rollercoaster, waiting in line and finally getting on it. The four foley sound that were required for this project were; footsteps, applauses, "have a good day" phrase and "welcome" phrase. To create this sounds we used the voice memos app on our phones and went into a quiet place so that the audio would be smoother. For the footsteps, we chose shoes that are more comfortable which people normally use in theme parks, and we also used a surface that is similar to the surface of the floor platform when you get in line to ride a roller coaster. The rest of the foley sounds were easier to do because we had to only record in a quiet place the words "have a good day" and "welcome" to help the viewer understand that our character is actually getting into the roller coaster and not only looking at it. After all of our foley sounds were recorded we started looking up on the websites provided the rest of the sounds effects, it was definitely hard to find the sounds effects of a roller coaster and make it seem like the people are riding it because we couldn't use a sound that last more than 10 seconds and trying to create the sound of a roller coaster with small clips was very hard especially because it didn't sound smooth at first.
I learned a lot with this project, it helped me realize all the work behind movies and video clips and how important sound is. The people who create foley sounds are very talented because if you don't use the right surface or object it might sound unrealistic.
